Diagnostics & repair

Reel-to-reel repair for machines worth keeping.

Vintage tape machines combine precision mechanics, audio electronics, power supplies, and control systems. Effective repair starts by understanding how those systems interact—not by replacing parts until the symptom disappears.

01Whole-system diagnosis

Find the cause, not only the symptom.

A transport that will not enter play, a channel that drops out, or a machine that cannot hold speed may have more than one plausible cause. The diagnostic process begins with the machine’s history, present behavior, and any work already attempted.

From there, the tape path, transport, control logic, power supplies, audio path, connectors, and removable assemblies are considered as parts of one electromechanical system. The goal is a repair plan based on evidence and the intended use of the machine.

  • Transport and control faults
  • Audio-path and channel problems
  • Power-supply and intermittent issues
  • Mechanical wear, lubrication, and tape-path concerns
02Service format

The machine determines where the work happens.

Large studio transports are generally serviced where they are installed. This avoids unnecessary handling and allows the machine to be evaluated in the environment where it is expected to work.

Smaller portable and consumer machines may be accepted for local drop-off after the make, model, condition, and requested work have been reviewed. Specific cards, power supplies, and removable control assemblies may be approved for shipment from outside the region.

03Before service

A useful inquiry saves diagnostic time.

Include the manufacturer and model, a concise description of the behavior, your location, machine accessibility, and clear photos. Recordings or short videos can also help when the problem is intermittent or difficult to describe.

Do not drop off a machine or ship a component before receiving approval. Vintage equipment varies too widely in size, condition, and parts availability for an unseen machine to be accepted responsibly.

Common questions

Before we begin.

Can I ship a complete reel-to-reel machine?

No. Complete machines are not accepted by shipment. Approved removable boards, power supplies, and other specific assemblies may be shipped after the scope has been reviewed.

Do you work on consumer as well as studio machines?

Smaller consumer and portable decks are considered case by case. Send the manufacturer, model, symptoms, location, and photos before arranging a drop-off.

Can you diagnose an intermittent fault?

Intermittent problems can be investigated, but useful details matter. Note when the fault appears, what changes it, and whether photos, recordings, or video capture the behavior.

Is travel outside Memphis available?

Yes. Work elsewhere in the Mid-South and beyond is considered according to the machine, project scope, schedule, and travel requirements.
